Samuel Hicks was born on what is now known as the Parks farm, south of Athensville, Ill., July 2, 1851, and died at the Passavant Hospital, Jacksonville, Illinois, July 26, 1918, aged 67 years and 26 days.
He was the son of Jesse W and Nancy Howard Hicks. His father was a native of Tenn., and his mother of South Carolina. He was the tenth child of a family of fourteen children all of whom preceded him in death except one brother of Scottville, Ill.
Deceased was married Jan. 21, 1873 to Sarah M. Grider, daughter of M. F. Grider, the marriage being performed by Tariton Whitlock, J. P. This marriage was blessed with five children two dying in infancy. The living are Lulu wife of R. A. Mansfield of Greenfield, Cora wife of V. A. Morrow of Athensville, Stelia at home. He also leaves three grandchildren namely Coy and Olive children of R. A. and Lula Mansfield and Dean son of V.
A. and Cora Morrow.
Shortly after marriage Mr. and Mrs. Hicks moved to the farm that was their home for over thirty years. He decided to discontinue farming and p0urchased Engineer Donnelly's residence in the east part of Roodhouse which place has since been their home. Nine years ago he submitted to an operation for gall stone and had enjoyed fair health until about a year ago a recurrence of the old trouble caused him to decide to obtain relief thru another operation. This proved fatal after much suffering, but remaining conscious to the last he passed away as above stated.
Mr. Hicks, by strict attention in business, acquired a fine farm of 300 acres besides other interests, and his untimely taking away is lamented by all. He leaves to mourn his departure the wife and family, many friends in the old home, besides those he had formed in his new home here. The funeral was held at the home Sunday afternoon, July 28 at one o'clock, conducted by Rev. A. J. Conlee. The remains were laid to rest in the Officer cemetery 2 1/2 miles west of Scottville.
The flowers were cared for by Misses Erma and Norma Ballard. The pall bearers were Messrs D. E. Husted, Harry Rawlins, Henry and Louis Ballard, Carl Anderson and D. F. King.
Those attending the funeral from a distance were as follows: Miss Florida Howard of Hillsboro, Ill.; Mrs. W. H. Hembrough, Dr. Hairgrove and sister, Jas. Sheppard, all of Jacksonville; Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Reynolds, Mr. and Mrs. Geo Morrow and Mrs. Staples of Woodson; Mr. Jas. Hicks and family, Mr. and Mrs. A. M. Ball, Mr. and Mrs. Jas. Anderson and son Joe, Mr. and Mrs. B. R. Mansfield and daughter Ida of Scottville; Mrs. Katie Grider and son Glenn, Mrs. G. W. Morrow, Mr. and Mrs. Nota Morrow and B. F. Morrow of Athensville; Lester Grider of Camp Taylor, KY: and Mr. and Mrs. Alonzo Allen and Chas Obanion of White Hall.
