Oscar Griggs was born on November 6, 1924 in Williman, North Dakota, the son of Edwin and Mae (Blunt) Griggs. He was raised in the Williman area where he received his education through the eighth grade at a rural country school near his home. As a young man, Oscar worked for his father and also helped out many of the neighbors on their farms. While Oscar's brothers served their country during WWII, he stayed home to help out with all the duties of running the farm. When his brothers returned home from the war, Oscar went out on his own to find work.
In 1949 he moved to Missoula, MT where he was employed with the Forest Service. In the spring of 1953 he moved to Bowman where he worked for the Lawrence Faris Family for one year and then helped out Lyle Miller for a year or so. In the spring of 1955, Oscar worked for Jessie (Abrahamson) Fandrick and on the 1st of November of 1955 he helped Virginia Domagala where he would help out for 7 years. Oscar went into partnership with the Hughes family from Wellsville, KS farming and ranching southwest of Bowman where they worked together for 34 1/2 years. In 1964, Oscar and his brothers John and Henry started moving hay with their cable mover and Oscar's 70 John Deere tractor. In 1965, Oscar bought his own hay mover and hired help to run both movers. In 1970 he sold the cable movers to buy a chain mover, which he ran with his 4020 John Deere tractor until 1996.
On November 25, 1968 Oscar was united in marriage to Carol Eagon in Belle Fourche, SD. After their marriage, they made their home on the Hughes farm where they would raise their children.
On February 1, 1991, Oscar and Carol moved into Bowman and on April 9, 1999, Oscar moved into the Southwest Healthcare Long Term Center in Bowman where he resided until the time of his death.
Oscar loved a good game of checkers or cards and telling jokes. He would move just about anything, even if he was told there was no way possible it could be moved. He enjoyed spending time with Bob Burdette prairie dog hunting, where they would go just about anywhere to hunt them. He was great for leaving notes, a rolled up piece of tissue paper on the key ring of your car to let you know he was looking for you. You could say Oscar could do just about anything; he often said it best, "I'm a jack of all trades, and a master of none". Oscar will be dearly missed.
Oscar is survived by his daughter and son-in-law; Jessie and Todd Steeke of Perham, MN; sons and daughters-in-law; Clifford Griggs of Rhame, ND, Oscar and Chentil Griggs of Rhame, ND, Cassey Griggs of Rhame, ND, Clancy Griggs of Couer d Alene, ID; 7 grandchildren, Alexis Griggs, Gary and John Steeke, Talia, Katelynn, Emily and Henry Griggs; mother of his children, Carol Griggs; sisters, Ruth Boespflug and Doris Griggs both of Dickinson, ND. Several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.
Oscar was preceded in death by his parents, Edwin and Mae Griggs; daughter, Lola LaVan; sister, Mary; brothers, Jim, John, Henry and Clifford.
