Early-Day Builder Removed by Death

The body of William (Bill) Campbell, 87, pioneer builder, planning mill operator and contractor, who first located at Grangeville, in 1892, was found Saturday afternoon at his home one block south of Main street near the foot of China Hill.

Investigating city officer Earl Huff, said Mr. Campbell apparently had died sometime Thursday. He was asked to investigate by William Hohenstreet, a neighbor, who noticed a light had been left burning at the Campbell home, the elderly man's body was found lying on the floor. Mr. Campbell had been in failing health for the past several years. He continued operation of his planing mill, doing smaller jobs for ranchers and contractors. Becoming feeble with advancing years, he built a wooden guard railing around the planer to prevent a possible fall into the machinery as he worked on lumber.

Mr. Campbell was born February 13, 1868 at Eugene, Ore. He was a bachelor. He came to Grangeville in 1892, working as a carpenter and contractor. He left Grangeville in 1896 and returned in 1902 to remain until his death.

During his long residence on Camas Prairie, Mr. Campbell planned and built many business houses and residences and was an authority on plate glass instillation. He was an expert roofer and installed many roofs on business houses.

He is survived by two brothers, Thomas Campbell, Eugene, and George W. Campbell, Boise; two sisters, Mrs. Grace Basche and Mrs. Elizabeth Izatt, both of Baker, Ore., and a nephew, Wilbur Campbell, Eugene, who arrived here to attend funeral services and settle his uncle's business affairs.

Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at 2 p.m. at the Robertson Funeral Chapel. Dr. Guy Roberts, pastor at Grangeville Community church officiated. Burial was at Prairie View Cemetery in Grangeville.
