Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thurs., July 14, for Robert Harlan Beyer, 57, Howard, who died July 10, 2005, at the V.A. Regional Hospital in Sioux Falls. The services will be held in St. John's Lutheran Church at Howard, and burial will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., with a prayer service at 7 p.m., all at the Willoughby Funeral Home in Howard. Visitation resumes one hour prior to the services on Thursday.

Beyer was born Nov. 8, 1947, at Madison to Paul and Gertrude (Lebahn) Beyer. He grew up in the Winfred area, where he attended country school and then Winfred High School until his junior year, when the school closed. He attended Howard High School, graduating in 1966. In 1967, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in Vietnam, where he was in the Black Horse unit. He received a sharpshooter medal and was a Purple Heart recipient. He was honorably discharged in 1969. He returned home and worked with his father on the farm. He married Joanne Olson on Feb. 5, 1971. They bought his parents' home place in 1973 and milked Holsteins. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church and a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans. He became ill in 1996 and had been in the V.A. Home since March 2004.

Survivors include his wife, Joanne of Howard; four sons, Michael (Karen) of Sioux Falls, Greg (Angela), Jeremy (Jenny) and Robby, all of Howard; three grandchildren; a brother, Herman (Elaine) of Elburn, Ill.; and two sisters, Elaine (Gerald) Alfson of Madison, and Lillian (Don) Westall of Morrill, Neb.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
