THOMAS HAWLEY was the son of CAPT. JOSEPH & LYDIA (MARSHALL) HAWLEY of Northampton, Mass. and grandson of CAPT. SAMUEL MARSHALL of Hartford, CT who was killed by Indians in the Great Swamp Fight in R.I. and probably buried at Smith's Castle in R.I. and his wife MARY (WILTON) MARSHALL and grandson of THOMAS HAWLEY of Parwich, Derby, England who was also killed by Indians at Sudsbury, Mass. in the Pequot War and his wife, DOROTHY.

Rev. Thomas Hawley was ordained in 1712/1713 and was the first pastor at Ridgefield and married ABIGAIL GOLD about 1712. Their house was one of the first built in Ridgefield and still stands (pictured). It is a private residence. His tombstone is the oldest in the Titicus Cemetery (now part of the Ridgefield Cemetery).

Thomas & Abigail are buried with three of their children:
Lt. Joseph Hawley, Ebenezer Hawley, and Capt. Thomas Hawley,
and two grandchildren: Talcott Hawley and John Gold Hawley.

Other Children: Abigail (Hawley) Lockwood, Ezekiel Hawley, DOROTHY (HAWLEY) BIRDSEYE -- my ancestor,Thomas Hauley was the town's first minister, teacher, and resident town clerk. The Harvard graduate died in 1738. The slate stone stands in the "old cemetery" portion of the Ridgefield Cemetery off Mapleshade Road.

This stone is not in the Ridgebury Cemetery. It is in the Old Settler's section of Titicus Cemetery, adjoining the Ridgefield Cemetery, on a triangular piece of land where several small cemeteries grew together over the years. The Ridgebury Cemetery is in a completely different location in Ridgefield, CT.
