She was the daughter of the late James Franklin and Inez Elizabeth Teague Austin in Buncombe County, where she resided. Glen, Edna, Alice, Bill, Germa, Kenny, and Charles, her siblings, all predeceased her. She was preceded by husbands, William Delbert Shields and Thurlow Simms Gash.
She is survived by a special niece, Janet, special nephews, Lyle and Gary and by special great nieces and nephews: Mark, Candace, Angie, David, Jennifer and Wesley.
Betty graduated from West Buncombe High School in 1945 and from Berea College, Berea, KY in 1952 where she earned the B.A. Biology degree. Her vocation was teaching junior high math and science in the Asheville City Schools from which she retired. Betty was a member of Trinity Presbyterian Church.
