Canton – Mary Austin Chason, age 77, passed away on Friday, June 13, 2013 at Silver Bluff Nursing Home.
Born and raised in Buncombe County, she was a daughter of the late Robert Glen and Bernice Sluder Austin. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Allen Austin. Throughout her lifetime, Mary was a waitress and server at various local restaurants and a member of Mount Carmel Baptist Church. She enjoyed gardening and working in her flowers as well as shopping and visiting flea markets always on the look-out for good deals. Mary was a caregiver at heart, always thinking and cooking for others. Above all, she adored her grandchildren, who were the light of her life and also had a special place in her heart for her Chihuahua, "Missy."
She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Jack Chason; three sons, David Chason and his wife, Teresa, of Canton, Derek Chason and his wife, Carolyn, of Orlando, Florida, and Don Chason and his wife, Patti, of Harrisburg; one sister, Jean Smith and her husband, Kenneth, of Horseshoe; and five grandchildren, Jessica, Kyle, Charley, Casey, and Patteson Chason; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 4:00 p.m. Saturday, June 15, 2013 in the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with the Reverend Ronnie Owens officiating. Burial will follow at Bon-A-Venture Cemetery on Old Clyde Road. The family will receive friends from 2:30 until 3:45 p.m. prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mt. Carmel Baptist Church, 200 Mount Carmel Road, Asheville, NC 28806.
