Lillian Foster Ackley, 77, of 211 Warren St., Sayre, passed away on Sunday, April 13, 2003, following a brief illness. Born Sept. 11, 1925 in East Smithfield, she was the eldest daughter of the late Thomas and Mary Catherine Lane Foster.

She was a 1944 graduate of Waverly, N.Y., High School and married Norman S. Ackley the same year. He predeceased her in June 1981.

She was employed at the Robert Packer Hospital for over 24 years before retiring as the executive secretary to the director of the School of Nursing. During this period, she was an active columnist contributor to numerous local and national publications, including The Daily Review, Star-Gazette, The Evening Times, Grit and Lion International Magazine. After retirement, she served as the executive secretary for the Valley Economic Development Association (VEDA). She was a big backer of the "Education for Industry Program," which won her the Toastmasters International Communication and Leadership Award in 1990. Following surgery for a brain tumor in 1990, she was left legally blind.

After recovering from surgery, she attended the Greater Pittsburgh Guild for the Blind. Following graduation from the Guild in 1992, she re-entered the workforce as the secretary of deputy director of Rural Development Association (RDA), northeast regional office in Sayre. She also continued as a columnist contributor to the Review during this time. She continued her education at the GPG for the Blind and became proficient using a special computer with voice capability. She received the "Outstanding Trainer Award" recognizing outstanding progress and inspiration in 1993. At the age of 73, a stroke forced her to discontinue her column for the Review.
