Columbus Washington Akin was the 3rd son of 5 sons of Judith Sarah Jane Akin b.17 Aug 1832 in the Burkesville area of Cumberland Co., KY & who possibly d.abt 1889 during a measles epidemic.

The father of Columbus Washington Akin, based on Y-DNA Analysis, has concluded with high probability, to be Charles Young b.abt 1808 in Wayne Co., KY & d.bef 1870 in Cumberland Co., KY. It is considered to be a non-marital relationship, however, it appears likely that Charles Young was widowed at the time.

Columbus married Alice Almarine Bow abt 1891 in Burkesville, Cumberland Co., KY.

Based on my recent research in Burkesville, Cumberland Co., KY at the Burkesville Library, I discovered many letters from a gentleman claiming to be the grandson of Alice Almarine Bow and Columbus Washington Akin. His name was Jackson Grover Akin, Jr., son of Jackson Grover Akin, Sr Rev. So, based on some of his research from Burkesville and combined with my additional research in this family, I will expand here.

Alice and Columbus had 8 children, who where:

1. Jackson Grover Akin b.26 Aug 1884 in Burkesville, Cumberland Co., KY & d.13 Sep 1962 in Owensboro, Daviess Co., KY.
Married: Nell Moss abt 18 Jan 1915 in Kentucky.

2. Lois Bell Akin b.3 Sep 1886 in Burkesville, Cumberland Co., KY & d.28 Jan 1918 in Moody, McLennan Co., TX.
Married: Robert Binns aka Bob on 2 Mar 1910 in Waco, McLennan Co., TX.

3. Rosa Lee Akin b.31 Jul 1888 in Burkesville, Cumberland Co., KY & d.6 Jan 1979 in Henderson, Rusk Co., TX.
Married: Duff Talton Bybee abt 1911 in Cumberland Co., KY.

4. Walter John Robert Akin b.abt 1890 in Burkesville, Cumberland Co., KY & d.Unknown
Married: Berthe Unknown

5. Pearl Akin b.9 Aug 1892 in Burkesville, Cumberland Co., KY & d.8 Jul 1966 in Houston, Harris Co., TX.
Married: Verner Baker Thomas abt 1909 in Burkesville, Cumberland Co., KY.

6. Walter Paul Akin b.25 May 1898 in Burkesville, Cumberland Co., KY & d.27 Feb 1972 in Waco, McLennan Co., TX
Married: Maureen E. (Unknown)

7. Silas Gordon Akin b.8 May 1900 in Burkesville, Cumberland Co., KY & d.Jun 1975 in El Dorado, Union Co., AR.
Married: Eva Pauline Singleton abt 1925, most likely in TX.

8. Possible son: Clifton Akin b.Unknown & d.unknown

Now this gets a bit complicated below.

It is not known exactly when Columbus died, however, I believe he died in Burkesville, Cumberland, KY, prior to Jun 1900, perhaps from the same measles eipidemic that killed his mother, before the 1900 Federal Census was taken in Cumberland County, because the family cannot be found there in 1900.

During this period, Alice still had one young son living with her, Walter Paul Akin, and then she had Silas on 8 May 1900, so it appears Alice set out with her two sons for Texas, almost as soon as she had the baby, and took up residence with the older brother of Columbus, John Samuel Akin, living in McLennan Co., TX, and who had been married to a Sallie Unknown, who I believe was Sarah Alexander, who must have left or died sometime after their May 1900 Federal Census, because she is no longer with John Samuel Akin by 1910, but Alice and her two sons are. Now, if you inspect the Texas Jun 1900 Census, it states that Silas is the son of John Samuel, but if he was, then wouldn't he have been stated before the other two boys, who were listed as nephews? In addition, Silas couldn't have been the son of John Samuel Akin because he was born in Kentucky on 5 May 1900 and John Samuel Akin was living with Sallie in McLennan Co., TX at that time.

By 1910, Alice and her two sons are with John Samuel Akin in McLennan Co., TX and Sallie is no longer there.

By 1920, Alice moved on to Nolan, Sweetwater Co., TX, renting a house, and living with her sons, Walter Paul Akin and Silas G. Akin, and it is stated in the Census they were both sons.

By 1930, she was living alone in Ranger, Eastland Co., TX, then in 1935, I find her in Paris, Lamar Co., TX where she is living with or near her daughter, Rosa Lee (Akin) Bybee who was married to Duff Talton Bybee in Paris, TX. It was Duff who signed the Death Certificate of Alice when she died.

I have been fortunate to come into contact with a son of Jackson Grover Akin, Jr and he has provided evidence that Jackson Grover Akin, Sr is indeed a son of Columbus W. Akin and Alice Almarine Bow and therefore this fact advances our knowledge of this family.

Note:
I might mention that there were two other Columbus Washington Akin's in the family that are not to be confused.

They were Columbus Washington Akin born to the older sister of Judith Sarah Jane Akin, who was Virginia Jennie Akin, in 1841. He was a Union Civil War soldier and he had a son, of the "same name", born in 1868, who ended up in Dunklin Co., MO. in 1880 Census, when this Columbus, b.1864, was still in Burkesville, KY, listed in that 1880 Census.
