Mrs Frances Ann Flournoy, widow of former State Senator Samuel Lightfoot Flournoy, died at her residence, 1117 Virginia Street, Charleston, WV. She had been in ill health for more than five years. Recently she had a sinking spell, but showed remarkable recuperative qualities, and her death, while suddenly, was not unexpected. Her husband for many years was prominent as a lawyer in Charleston, where, he was a member of the firm of Flournoy, Price and Smith. Mrs Flournoy was born at Romney, Hampshire County, Virginia, on April 10, 1844. She was a member of one of the oldest families in the Valley of Virginia, being a daughter of John Baker White and Frances Ann Straight, of Romney and Winchester, VA, and a granddaughter of Judge Robert White, of the general court of Virginia, and Judith Baker, of an old Maryland family. Judge Robert White, her grandfather, was a major in the Revolutionary army and one of the original members of the Order of Cincinnati, a friend of Washington and General Charles Lee and a grandson of Dr Robert White, of Paisley, Scotland, the latter settling in the Valley of Virginia near Winchester about 1730. Mrs Flournoy was one of the most widely known and loved women in Charleston. She was a member of the Society of Colonial Dames a lifelong member of the Presbyterian Church, a devout Christian and one who had all the exalted virtues and qualities of mind and heart that could be associated with one of her ancestry and family traditions. Mrs Flournoy was survived by one daughter Mrs Frances Flournoy Preston, of Lewisburg, and four sons, Richard Park, Harry L., Samuel L. and Alexander W., of Charleston.
