Funeral services were held on Sunday afternoon at 1:45 at the Smykil Funeral Home and at 2:30 at Wayne Zion Lutheran church for Herman G. Dirks, who died Thursday at his home in Anamosa. The Rev. F.H. Kehren officiated. Interment was in the family lot at Wayne Zion cemetery. Pallbearers were Robert Sayer, Carl Dirks, Henry Hults, George Schoon, Fred Helgens and John Rieken.
Herman Gerhard Dirks, son of Henrichs Melchers Dirks and Trinke Margareta Hoefing Dirks, was born April 18, 1882 in Wayne Township, Jones County. He was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran church by Pastor Mardorf. He chose farming to be his life's vocation. On account of an accident which necessitated a 17 weeks stay at the Monticello hospital, he lived with his father at Monticello from 1907 to 1916. He was married to Meta Helen Louise Rieken on March 2, 1916, and they lived on their farm in Wayne Township from 1916 to 1923 from which they moved to Anamosa. They returned to the farm in 1929 where they lived until Mr. Dirks sold the farm in 1930, moving to their present home in March 1931. He was a lifelong member of Zion Lutheran church.
He died on Thursday, July 19, 1945 at his residence on Walnut Street, at the age of 62 years, 3 months and 1 day. He was preceded in death by his father and a brother, D.J. Dirks, who died August 21, 1941.
Surviving are his wife of Anamosa; two brothers, John H. Dirks of Langworthy, Henry M. Dirks of Anamosa; two sisters, Mrs. Meta Folkers of Langworthy and Mrs. Fred Hults of Cass Township, other relatives and a host of friends.
