Richard C. "Buzz" Shope, 89, of Westminster Woods, Huntingdon, PA, where he has resided since December, 2011, passed away at 3:00 A.M., on Thursday, May 23, 2013, at The Oaks at Westminster Woods, Huntingdon, PA.

Born on August 16, 1923 in Altoona, PA, he was a son of the late George William and Elizabeth Gable (Treece) Shope. He was united in marriage to the former Leota Mae Wyerman on August 27, 1949 at the Evangelical Lutheran Church, Duncansville, PA. Mrs. Shope survives at Westminster Woods.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by three daughters and one son, Yvonne Wilson, and her husband, Stephen of Huntingdon, Pamela Kyper, and her husband, Kenneth of McConnellstown, Richard Shope, and his wife, Lisa of Donation, and Sylvia Byers, and her husband, Max of Huntingdon. Also surviving are his son-in-law, Raymond "Mike" Kemp of Huntingdon, twelve grandchildren and nineteen great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Marsha Kemp, on May 19, 2010, and one grandson, Clayton Kyper, in January, 1984. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family having been preceded in death by one brother and three sisters, Albert J. Shope, Mary J. Robertson, Margaret S. Alley, and Elizabeth S. DeMario.

Mr. Shope was a member of the Huntingdon Presbyterian Church, Huntingdon, for more than fifty years, and during that time served as a church Elder, Deacon, and Trustee. He also volunteered with the Huntingdon Meals-on-Wheels program.

He was a member of Mount Moriah Lodge #300, F&AM, Huntingdon, Jaffa Shrine, Blair County and Alexandria Sportsmen Clubs, Standing Stone Bassmasters, and Standing Stone Post #1754, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Huntingdon.

He attended Altoona Area public schools and Altoona High School.

He was inducted in the U.S. Army on February 4, 1943 and served during World War II with Company B 342nd Infantry Regiment in Central Europe. He attained the rank of Staff Sergeant and was honorably discharged on January 27, 1946. He received the Purple Heart Medal, Bronze Star Medal, Good Conduct Medal, WWII Victory Medal, American Campaign Medal, and the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with one Bronze Star.

Mr. Shope worked in the family business, Shope's Garage, in Tyrone, until 1959 when he opened Shope Motors in Huntingdon. He owned Shope Motors until his retirement in 1985. Mr. Shope was an avid sportsman who loved hunting and fishing and won numerous shooting awards.

A celebration of life service will be held at 11:00 A.M., on Tuesday, May 28, 2013, at The Commons at Westminster Woods, 140 Aspen Lane, Huntingdon, PA, with the Reverend Harold G. Williams, Jr. officiating. A masonic memorial service will also be conducted during that time.

Friends will be received and are invited to a luncheon immediately following the service at The Commons. Private interment will be held at the convenience of the family in Blair Memorial Park, Bellwood, PA.
