F.E. Fairfax dies after long illness -
Frank Ernest Fairfax, long identified with the business interests and civic life of this community, died yesterday at his home, 137 Maxwell avenue, after a long illness. Mr. Fairfax was president-treasurer of the Fairfax Bros. Co. Inc., and of the Fairfax Realty Corp.
He was born in this city October 26, 1866, the son of George Henry and Elizabeth Dunn Fairfax. He received his early education in the Geneva public schools and in 1884 entered the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis, Md. However in June, 1885 he resigned on account of ill health and returned to Geneva, where he was employed in his father's paint and wallpaper business.
In 1891 he became a partner with his brothers George and Charles, who had bought out their father in 1883. The business was continued under the name of Fairfax Bros. until 1913 when it was incorporated as Fairfax Bros. Co., Inc., and has continued as such up to the present time, being one of the oldest firms in Geneva.
In 1895 the three brothers organized the Geneva Wall Paper Co., which continued in operation until 1913, when it was destroyed by fire.
Also in the later year, the Fairfax Realty Corp., was organized, dealing largely in their own real estate holdings, property being owned by them among the west side of Linden street, as well as a block of four stores on the north side of Seneca.
Mr. Fairfax served fro eleven years, from 1887 to 1898, in Company B. Provisional Regiment, New York National Guard. He was honorably discharged as sergeant.
He was married March 4th, 1897, to Caroline A. Crittenden of Geneva, daughter of Immer W. and Martha Catchpole Crittenden. She died January, 1933. They had four children, Charles Crittenden who resides in Rochester, Thomas Russell, George Henry and Dr. Kenneth Tyne Fairfax of Geneva.
They survive, with his widow. Mrs. Gladys York Fairfax, whom he married July 27, 1937. Mr. Fairfax also leaves two grand-daughters; two nieces; a half-brother, Alfred Fairfax, Boston, Mass., and a stepdaughter, Miss Elma A Off, Geneva.
Mr. Fairfax was active in the work of the local Methodist church, having been treasurer of the Board of Trustees for twenty years. He was the second oldest fireman in the city and had a charter member of the Hydrant Hose Company. He was a member of the Geneva Lodge of Elks, the Chamber of Commerce, Rod and Gun Club, Y.M.C.A., and a charter member of the Geneva Kiwanis Club. He was recently honored with a special birthday radio program by that organization. Mr. Fairfax also spent many summers at Kashong where he had a cottage.
The funeral will be held at 2:30 o'clock tomorrow afternoon in the family home on Maxwell avenue with the Rev. Dr. C.G. McConnell officiating, Interment will be in Glenwood Cemetery. Dr. McConnell will be assisted by Bishop Ralph Cushman of Denver Colorado, former pastor of the local church. Officials of the church are to meet at 2:15 at the home of George Nagel, 103 Maxwell avenue, to attend the funeral in a body.

However, in June, 1885, he resigned on account of ill health and returned to Geneva, where he immediately became associated with his father's wall paper and paint business. In 1891 he became a partner in the business and was associated with his brothers, George S. and Charles W., the latter two having purchased the father's interests in the enterprise. The business was incorporated in 1913 and it has continued as one of the city's most successful industrial plants. In 1895 the Fairfax Brothers also organized the Geneva Wall Paper Company, which continued in operation until 1913 when the plant was totally destroyed by fire. In the latter year they were founders ofthe Fairfax Realty Corporation, which was organized for the purpose of managing real estate holdings of the brothers, property being owned by them west of Linden Street, as well as a block of four stores on the north side of Seneca Street in Geneva.
In 1887 he enlisted in Company B, Provisional Regiment, New York National Guard, and served for eleven years. He was honorably discharged as a sergeant.
Mr. Fairfax was married March 4, 1897, to Miss Caroline A. Crittenden, the daughter of Immer W. and Martha (Catchpole)Crittenden, of Geneva. They are the parents of the following children:
1. Charles Crittenden, born December 8, 1898, a graduate of Cornell University, class of 1921, mechanical engineer, now associated with the Stecher Lithographing Company, of Rochester, New York. He is a World War veteran and holds a commission as a lieutenant in the United States Reserve Corps, Coast Artillery.
2. Thomas Russell, born April 4, 1901, a graduate of Geneva High School, attended Cornell University for two years, now secretary of Fairfax Bros. Company, Inc. He is married and has a daughter, Elizabeth Jean.
3. George Henry, born March 17, 1907, a graduate of Colgate University, class of 1930, Bachelor of Arts, now associated with Fairfax Bros. Company, Inc.
4. Kenneth Tyne, born December 20, 1909, a graduate of Cornell University, class of 1931, Bachelor of Arts, now attends Cornell Medical Center, New York City.
Mr. Fairfax is a Republican, and is affiliated with Geneva Lodge of Elks, Kiwanis Club, Isaac Walton League, Y. M. C. A., Geneva Rod and Gun Club, The Hydrant Hose Company since
1886 and the Tribe of Kashong. He is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, of which he has been treasurer of the board of trustees for twenty years, and his wife is an active member of the First Baptist Church. They live at 137 Maxwell Avenue.
