"BENJAMIN MAPES 8 NOV 1901

In the death of Benjamin Mapes the town of Mount Hope loses one of its oldest residents. He died at his home near Howells Depot, Tuesday, aged 91 years and 8 months. Mr. Mapes was born and spent the whole of his long life on the homestead farm and engaged successfully in farming. For a number of years prior to the building of the Erie Railroad he ran a market wagon between Mount Hope and Newburgh. He was married January 25, 1824, to Sarah Stone, who died November 3, 1881. Eight children were born to them, of who four survive. They are Isaac T., of Howells; Susan E., widow of C.C.V. Ketcham, of Middletown, and Catharine A., wife of Hector Tuthill, of Howells."
