He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Betty Carson Etzel, one daughter, one son and four granddaughters.
Earl was an avid tennis player and photographer and was especially proud that he and both of his brothers attained the rank of Eagle in the Boy Scouts of America.
He was a member of University United Methodist Church in Baton Rouge.
