After taking a bit of a tumble at home, Meg Stevens had to let her friends and family know she was OK, so she updated her status on Facebook.
"She had the Facebook app on her iPhone, and she basically told my sister what to post, because she couldn't do it herself," Martha Howard said, of her mother. "The post said something about her being in the ER and having broken her clavicle, but that she would be OK."
Howard, who was visiting from of Mason, Ohio, planned to check in on her mother the next day, but hours after she, and her sister, left the hospital, they were called back. Stevens had gone into cardiac arrest, the doctors said.
Mary Edith "Meg" Guckes Harrell Stevens died later that evening, May 30, at Saint Joseph's Hospital. She was 85.
A memorial service is planned for 3:30 p.m. Sunday at Huntcliff Summit, Sandy Springs, where she lived the last few months. A private burial was held Monday at West Laurel Hill Cemetery, Bala Cynwyd, Pa. Sandy Springs Chapel was in charge of arrangements.
Completely tech savvy when it came to Apple-brand products, Stevens was the unofficial tech support person among her friends at Huntcliff Summit, her daughters said. And her iPad, iPhone and Macintosh laptop were not just gadgets to Stevens, this technology helped her as she blogged, posted pictures and worked on multiple genealogy projects. And it wasn't just her genealogy she traced, but she spent years helping others learn about their history.
"She has always been interested in history and preserving the past," said daughter, Scotti McCarthy, of Denver, Colo. "She had a thirst for knowledge, but she also wanted other people to know their past, and their history, so they could pass it on to the next generation."
A native of Bryn Mawr, Pa., Stevens came to Atlanta in 1969. In the past four years, she has helped an untold number of people find their ancestors by gaining access to The Mount Vernon Cemetery in Philadelphia, which is closed to visitors.
"She was very irked about this, because she thought cemeteries should be open to the public and certainly to the decedents of the people buried there," Howard said. "So what she started doing was, as newspapers started posting obits online, she would enter that information in to Findagrave.com. She was searching all kinds of newspaper obituary archives, and posting the information she found."
Stevens contributed to more than 32,000 entries on the grave-locating website over the past four and a half years, her daughters said.
When Stevens wasn't working on a specific genealogical project, she was often gardening or traveling. She participated in archaeological digs around the world, and took every opportunity she could to learn about other cultures, her daughters said.
"She was always into puzzles and problem-solving," Howard said. "She never lost that curiosity."
In addition to daughters Howard and McCarthy, Stevens is survived by a third daughter, Mary R. Harrell-Sesniak of Houston, Texas; son, Evans Malott Harrell II of Atlanta; sister Margaret "Peggy" Krementz of Morristown, N.J.; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and step-children, Lawrence Wright "Larry" Stevens, of Washington, Marguerite Wright "Margie" Hughes of Maryland, John Wright Stevens of New York, N.Y., and Susan Wright Schmidt of Atlanta and their children.

Meg was educated at Shipley School and attended Swarthmore College. On Feb. 7, 1948, she married Evans Malott Harrell at St. David's Church in Philadelphia, by whom she had four children. On May 21, 1983, she married John Stanley Stevens, who preceded her in death May 25, 1996. Meg was an active genealogist, author of genealogical books and a bridge life master. Memberships included various lineage societies. She had a passion for travel and gardening, inspired by grandmother Edith (Wilder) Scott who established the Scott Arboretum at Swarthmore in honor of her husband Arthur, second president of Scott Paper Company. Private interment in the family plot at West Laurel Hill Cemetery (Philadelphia, PA) with a life celebration in Atlanta on June 9, from 3-5:00 at Huntcliff Summit, 8592 Roswell Road, Sandy Springs, GA.
