Football Coach At San Marcos Dies At Banquet
(Died: 13 May 1967)

SAN MARCOS (TX) - Funeral for Owen L. Goodnight Jr., 49, a native of Holland, will be at 11:30 a.m. Monday at the First Methodist Church of San Marcos with burial in San Marcos City Cemetery.

Mr. Goodnight, athletic director and head football coach at San Marcos High School, died at 8:30 p.m. Saturday of a heart attack while attending a banquet given in his honor by the Rattler Booster Club.

During his 16 years at San Marcos high School, he compiled an 118-49-4 record, winning six district football championships. In 1964 he took his team to the state Class AAA finals. In 1965 and 1966 he directed the San Marcos to the AAA finals.

After graduating from Holland High School and Hardin-Simmons University in 1940, he played professional football for the Cleveland Rams. In World War II he was an infantry captain and company commander during the Battle of the Bulge. He was decorated for gallantry in action after the campaign.

After World War II he was a quarterback for the Chicago Bears and the Baltimore Colts. He started his coaching career at Pasadena (TX) and in 1951 went to San Marcos.

He was a member of the baord of stewards of the First Methodist Church and was active in San Marcos Lions Club.

Survivors include his wife, Eva; two daughters, Debbie and Pam, both of San Marcos; His father, Owen Goodnight Sr. Of Holland; four brothers, Edward R. Goodnight of Barlett; and Dr. C. D. Goodnight, Melvin Goodnight and Wayne Goodnight, all of Holland; for sisters, Mrs. David Walker of High Point, NC, Mrs Roy Ragsdale of Belton, Mrs. Hubert Nutt of Valley Mills and Mrs. Carolyn Simmons of Temple. Pennington Funeral Home of San Marcos in charge.

According to Thomas Goodnight Jr. - "Dr. Clyde Davis "Nip" GOODNIGHT and his brother Owen Letcher "Tuck" GOODNIGHT, Jr. were known as "Nip" and "Tuck" while playing sports in highschool." The nickname "Nip" followed Clyde Davis GOODNIGHT into his adult years.
