Jane was the third child of Walter Corbett, Sr and Jane Malkin. The family learned of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints (Mormons) while living in Wolverhampton, Staffordshire, England. They were all baptized during the year 1849, Jane on November 4th, 1889. Her father died in August that same year.

She married William Burns in England on December 15th, 1851. They immigrated to the United States in 1853 or 1854, settling in Morgan county, Illinois, not far from St Louis.

The remaining family immigrated to the United States at various times during the 1850s, with the intent of gathering to Utah with the rest of the church. One brother, Joseph, did make it to Utah where he married and had a family.

William Burns died in 1867, and by 1880 Jane was in St. Louis with her 2nd husband, William Martin.
