His death certificate lists him as being 99 years 5 months and 2 days old, born on January 10, 1832. The Regimental history, however, says he was 23 when he enlisted on August 22, 1861 and this is consistent with his age on all the Pennsylvania Census records when he lived there, so his year of birth is probably 1838.
His wife Amanda H. (McVaugh) Cass predeceased him.
