Selina Keeler, 91, of Hardin passed away Thursday, June 16, 2005.
She was born July 21, 1913 in Chester to James and Margaret Fornwald O'Brien. The family moved to Hardin in the fall of 1918 and later to St. Xavier in the spring of 1919. She was a tomboy at heart, a champion high jumper for the St. Xavier School, competing against Hardin boys while in the seventh and eighth grades. She loved horseback riding and one time, while racing some boys, she fell off and broke her hand. They picked her up and she rode home. She loved fishing "was always lucky," loved gardening, playing cards and being with her family.
Selina met Clarence Keeler in 1937 and they were married on Dec. 27, 1938 in St. Xavier. They began their life together on Soap Creek, later moving close to Two Leggin Bridge, until purchasing their home six miles south of Hardin. Mr. Keeler died in 1982. Selina continued to live at their home, until moving to town in 1989.
She was a faithful member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, a charter member of Catholic Daughters who helped with funerals and breakfasts, a very active Big Horn County senior citizen, including the Kitchen Band, was awarded the Senior Citizen of the Year in 1995 and a former member of the St. Xavier and Two Leggin Home Demonstration clubs.
Her parents, husband, Clarence, daughters, Patricia and Marjorie, brother, Leonard and son-in-law, Harold Haldorsen preceded her in death.
Survivors include her daughters, Theresa Haldorsen of White Sulphur Springs, JoAnn Potts and Betty Christman of Hardin; her sisters, Margaret Reile of Hardin, Rita Hammond of Wyoming, Mary (Tim) Hurley of Idaho, Lila (Roger) Fossen of Minnesota, Patricia Hanson and Stella Luther of Billings; her brothers, Jim (Juanita) O'Brien of Wyoming and Stafford (Mary) O'Brien of Washington; her grandchildren, Jerry, Cindy, Tina, Denny, Jason, Selene, and Justin; her great-granddaughters, Tabitha, Jamie and Kimberly and two great-great-grandsons, Brenden and Trey.
Rosary was recited Monday, June 20 in the Bullis Funeral Chapel. Funeral Mass was celebrated Tuesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Interment followed in the Custer National Cemetery at the Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument. Bullis Mortuary of Hardin has been entrusted with arrangements.
