Matthew James Barlow was the son of Alfred Hinton Barlow and Elizabeth Gibson. On July 25, 1856, he married Elizabeth Alexander in Neosho, Missouri. During the Civil War, Matthew James Barlow served as a private in Company M, 9th Kansas Cavalry.
