The Wellington Leader October 1, 1936
Funeral services for Mrs. Minerva E. Bell, 83, were held Thursday, afternoon at 2 o'clock, at the Plymouth Cemetery, conducted by Rev. A. V. Hendrix of Hedley.
Mrs. Bell was buried in the Plymouth Cemetery, beside her stepmother, Mrs. Shirley, who died many years ago. The funeral was held in the cemetery at Mrs. Bell's request.
Born in Kentucky, March 12, 1853, Mrs. Bell was 83 years, six months and 11 days of age at the time of her death. She had been ill for the past four months, as the result of an accident in which she broke her hip, while attempting to light the stove in her home, across from the Wellington Hospital.
After leaving Kentucky, Mrs. Bell came to Texas in 1876, was married to John R. Bell at Mineral Wells in 1882, moved to New York City in 1887, then to Seattle Washington in 1893 and came back to Texas in 1899. She moved to Collingsworth County in 1903. Since that time she has spent the remainder of her life in this county, visiting at times with relatives, and residing at her home here.
Through her long residence here Mrs. Bell acquired many staunch friends, including old timers who knew her in the earlier days. By these friends, scattered over the entire county, her death was mourned as one whom they knew to be a kind, devout woman of the pioneer days.
She is survived by two sisters, Mrs. S. H. Gragg, of Wellington, and Mrs. J. H. Brown of Abernathy; four brothers, J. S. Shirley of Dalhart, Ben Shirley of Abernathy; Mack Shirley of Erick, Oklahoma, and Jess Shirley of Lazbuddie, Texas.
She is also survived by a large number of nieces and nephews, some of whom reside in this county.
