Charles Whitehead, 71, 6-time N.J. golf champ

North Brunswick –Charles Whitehead, 71 of Hidden Lake Drive, died yesterday at St. Peters Medical Center, New Brunswick. Born in South River, he resided in Central Jersey all of his life. He was a leading amateur golfer for many years. Before retiring in January, he was an assistant manager at the Tamarack Golf Course, East Brunswick. Mr. Whitehead was an Army veteran of World War II, and received a Bronze Star. He was a former member of the New Brunswick Board of education, the board of directors of the Heritage Bank, and was past president and a former member of the board of directors of Washington Monumental Cemetery, South River. He was a member of the B.P.O Elks Lodge 324, New Brunswick, was a past member of the Plainfield Country Club, and past president of the State Exchange Club. Mr. Whitehead won the New Jersey Amateur Golf Championship a record six times, winning five in a row from 1938 through 1942. He became the first amateur to win the Amatory and the State Open in the same year, defeating Vic Ghezzi, then the defending national PGA champion. He won several club championships at the Plainfield and Forsgate country clubs. Surviving his wife, Evelyn Samuelson Whitehead; and three daughters, Nan Conlon of North Brunswick, Janice Whitehead of Hyannis, Mass. and Diane Whitehead of Huntington Beach, Calif. Services will be Thursday at 9:30 a.m. at the Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, Lonardine Avenue, South River. Arrangements are under the direction of the Rezem Funeral Home, 457 Cranbury Road, East Brunswick. Burial will be in Washington Monumental Cemetery, South River.
