At some time before 1885 Thomas emigrated to Quebec, Canada as a young man and lived with his cousin, Louise Rooney, and her husband Tom. By 1885 he had moved to Pine Castle, Florida, an English settlement, and is listed as a pioneer of the town. He became a farmer, raising citrus and pineapples. Thomas had four brothers, William (Annie), Christopher, John and Robert (Jane) and sisters, Sarah Ann, Elizabeth and Mary Ann (Henry Alexander Bowes).
The information for Thomas' headstone was provided by his son Claude and says that he was born in 1855 but his birth certificate shows his birth as 1853.
