Samuel Jordan Leyendecker, 83, passed away Dec. 22, 2002.
He was born Dec. 6, 1919. He was the son of the late Peter P. Leyendecker Jr. and Emma Jordan Leyendecker.
He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Peter P. Leyendecker III and Albert Leyendecker.
Sam first attended St. Peter's Memorial School and graduated from Martin High School.
His love for fishing, hunting and ranching began as a young cowhand working on the Callaghan ranch.
He served in the U.S. Army Air Force from August 1943 until March 1946.
About half of that time was spent on the islands of Leyte and Luzon, in the Phillipines; on the island of IE Shima, adjacent to Okinawa; and then as part of the Army of occupation on the main island of Japan, Hokaido.
He was a past commander of American Legion Post 59.
He started with U.S. Customs on February 9, 1942 until his retirement as customs inspector on December of 1983.Most of his tenure with U.S. Customs was in Laredo with special assignments in Washington D.C., Argentina, Panama, and Mexico.
He was also, director of U.S. Customs Schools, which were conducted in Laredo from November 1961 through 1970 for groups of foreign custom officers.
He is survived by his wife, Janet Leyendecker and his children, Emma, of Lubbock, Janet, of Tarpley, Frances, of Laredo, Sam, of Dallas, Jean, of Beeville, Helen, Bede and Kevin, of Laredo.
Mr. Leyendecker is also survived by his grandchildren, Andrew , James , Anna, of Lubbock, Greg, of Arlington, Tanya, of Laredo, Andrea, of Houston, Christopher, of Delaware, Adam, of New York, Janet, of Beeville, Ricardo and David, of San Antonio, Michael and Daniela, of Laredo; and seven great grandchildren.
He is also survived by his brothers, Richard, Frank, Gilbert of Laredo and a sister, Emily Ann, of Quahna, Texas.
