About the time of his marriage, he discovered the Christian sect and became a preacher of this new religion, splitting from the Baptist denomination.At the beginning of his evangelistic work, he served in Salem, Haverhill, and other places.
In 1806, he settled in Essex, Massachusetts and remained there until 1813. In 1814, he moved to Woodstock, Vermont. He also lived in Danville and Bradford, Vermont.
In 1822, John and Betsey moved to her home town of Milton, Massachusetts and remained there until his death.
In 1851, his wife Betsey died and John Rand despite being partially paralyzed lived until May 31, 1855.
