Co-founder and leader of the Ladies' Land League, the first women's political organization in Ireland, which was suppressed by her brother, Charles Stewart Parnell, in 1882. She was born Catherine Maria Anna Mercer Parnell at Avondale, near Rath-drum, County Wicklow; drowned off Ilfracombe, Devon, in 1911; daughter of John Henry Parnell (a landowner) and Delia (Stewart) Parnell; sister of Charles Stewart Parnell (1846–1891, Irish reformer and politician); sister-in-law of Katherine O'Shea (1845–1921).
