FORMER WINONA MAN KILLED BY LIGHTNING BOLT

William Goltz Struck at McGregor, Iowa During Severe Electrical Storm - Several From Here Attend Funeral

WAS MEMBER OF "C" GUARD UNIT

Several of his relatives have returned from McGregor, Iowa, where they attended the funeral of William Goltz, formerly of Winona, who was killed last Thursday when he was struck by a bolt of lightning in one of the worst electrical storms reported in that territory for years.

Mr. Goltz had taken only a few steps from the Milwaukee round-house where he was employed on his way home from work, when he was struck. His watch stopped at 11:05, and although he was not found until 4 a.m. Friday, relatives believed that to have been the hour of his death. The lights of the town were not working and telephone lines were down, so his family thought that he had gone out on a wrecking crew and were not alarmed by his non-appearance.

He was given a military funeral on Sunday with the American Legion in charge. Those from Winona and the vicinity who attended the rites were Mr. and Mrs. Hugh W. McNally, Mr. and Mrs. Leo Wise, Miss Anna Braatz and Charles Braatz of Winona, Miss Violet Farnholtz and Charles McNally of Ridgeway, Mrs. Verne Lee of Dakota, Mr. and Mrs. George Davis of Pickwick, and Mrs. Paul Timm of Plainview.

Mr. Goltz was born in Winona on January 11, 1894 and spent his early life with his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. William Braatz of Ridgeway. He left Winona with Company "C" third pioneer infantry and spent a year in France. On his return, he went to McGregor, Iowa, and married Miss Jennie Gorkow on November 20, 1920. They have one child, Doris, aged 4.

Besides his wife and daughter, he is survived by his mother, Mrs. Wilhelmina "Minnie" Goltz, brothers, Edward, Herbert, Lawrence, Charles and John; sisters, Mrs. Bertram Schott, Misses Leona, Anna, Mary, and Winifred, all of Marquette, Iowa, and another brother, Louis, of McGregor, Iowa.
