Henry moved west to Saskatchewan about 1911 and applied for a homestead near Eston, Snipe Lake, Saskatchewan. He became a highly regarded farmer in the district. In 1915 his sister Sarah, a widow with two small sons, joined him to help care for the house, and his younger brother Sidney arrived in early 1916. In the early fall of 1915 Herman contracted Typhoid and died in nearby Brock Hospital, His siblings were left to run the homestead. Arrangements were made for his body to be shipped by train home to his family in Chatham.
