U.S. Congressman. Immigrating to the United States, he studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1813 and commenced to practice law in Zanesville, Ohio. He was a member of the Ohio State House of Representatives, (1820-21) and president judge of the court of common pleas, (1822-36). In 1837, he was elected as a Whig to the Twenty-fifth Congress, serving until 1839, then elected to the Twenty-eighth and Twenty-ninth Congresses, serving (1943-47). He was again elected to the Thirty-second Congress, serving (1851-53). After leaving Congress, he resumed the practice of law until his death age 74.
