Her birth is recorded in several other places that list it as Jan 1868 and not the 1870 on her headstone. On the 1900 census she gives her birth as Jan 1868, this is also recorded in book "Andrew Newcomb 1618-1686 And His Descendants" pub. 1874 by John Bearse Newcomb, "Centennial History of Harrison, Maine" compiled by Alphonso Moulton, Howard L. Sampson and Granville Fernald, pub. 1909.
She is the daughter of Simon Newcomb and his second wife, Mary Richards of Waterford, ME. Melvina was child number 19 of 24 total children for Simon Newcomb. Her name has been spelled several different ways, but the spelling of her name, Melvina was taken from her signature on her husbands probated will in 1925.
She is a descendant Henry Samson of the Mayflower.
