Private, Company D, 18th Pennsylvania Cavalry. Enlisted on Spetember 8, 1862. Discharged by General Order No. 77 A.G.O. on June 16, 1865 from U.S. General Hospital in Cumberland, Maryland. Also listed as Roland and Rolan.

Worked as a shoemaker after the war. His wife, Ellen Rowland, filed for a widow's pension on June 2, 1880, application number 266,724, certificate 220,584. Received a government headstone in Catholic Cemetery, Cleveland, Ohio.
