Walter served with the New York Heavy Artillery in the Civil War. He was seriously wounded in the "Battle of the Wilderness" and was present when Robert E Lee surrendered at Appomattox. He also took part in the "Grand Review of Union Troops" before Lincoln in Washington D.C.. He was a member of the G.A.R and had interests in the American Legion in Bad Axe.
