Edward Cockram was the son of Richard Cockram and Elizabeth Buckingham.
Edward arrived in Western Australia on the Sophia in 1850 and originally settled in Gingin with his parents. For 40 years he lived in the Mundijong district where he had farming interests.

At the age of 31 he built a large double storey homestead hotel called the Jarrahdale Inn. The Jarrahdale Inn became known as the Whitby Falls Coach House, which was attached to land now known as Whitby Estate. The Jarrahdale Inn formed the social centre of the Serpentine and Jarrahdale area and catered for the Jarrahdale timber workers and for travellers on the stagecoach run to Pinjarra. It was also within convenient walking distance of a siding on the Jarrahdale-Rockingham railway.

Edward married Frances Kemp in 1873, probably while the Jarrahdale Inn was under construction. They had 12 children, most of whom lived around Mundijong for many years.

During the last 12 years of his life he had been living in retirement at Claremont. Five sons, five daughters and 33 grandchildren survived him.
