Mrs. Long was born to the union of Martin V. Manly and Eliza Watson, who married in Jefferson County, MO on February 5, 1854. Her mother died when she was a small child.
Lavenia and her siblings were raised by their Aunt Martha Watson Hammel in their father's home until he remarried in 1873. Shortly thereafter, she was placed in a convent by her father (although she wasn't Catholic), where she completed her high school education. Her father, stepmother, brother Ross H. Manly, and half-brother John B. Manly moved to Crittenden Co., AR sometime before 1880. Her other brother, Aaron R. Manly married and became a coal miner in the area of Collinsville and O'Fallon, IL.
Meanwhile, Lavenia and her younger sister Fannie moved to NE where each stayed with one of their late mother's sisters. On May 29, 1881, Lavenia married Albert Newton Long in Gretna, NE. They were the parents of ten children, including twin boys who died in infancy.

Last evening at midnight at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Charles Campbell, near South Bend, occurred the death of Mrs. A. N. Long, 73, a resident of Plattsmouth for a great many years and a lady loved and highly esteemed in this community.
Mrs. Long has spent the greater part of her lifetime in this city and in Sarpy county where the family resided near Gretna before moving to Plattsmouth in 1905. Mrs. Long was a devoted and loving mother and her passing has brought to the members of the family circle a great sorrow.
She is survived by three daughters and two sons, Mrs. Charles Campbell, of South Bend; Mrs. Dewey Jensen of Omaha; Mrs. Earl Leesley of Plattsmouth; Vern Long, of Central City and Guy Long of Plattsmouth. There are also twenty-two grandchildren.
The body was brought to this city and funeral services will be held on Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Sattler funeral home. The burial will be at Gretna, where the husband and one son, Edward Long, are buried.

The funeral services of Mrs. A. N. Long were held Thursday afternoon at the Sattler funeral home and largely attended by the old friends who had known Mrs. Long in the many years of her residence here.
The service was conducted by Rev. H. G. McClusky, pastor of the First Presbyterian church, who gave to the sorrowing family words of comfort and hope and held to them the promise of life to come when separations will be no more and man will receive the crown of everlasting life.
During the service Mrs. Hal Garnett and Frank A. Cloidt gave two of the favorite songs of the departed, ``Going Down the Valley One by One,'' and ``Jesus Lover of My Soul.''
At the close of the service here the funeral cortege drove to Gretna where the interment was made at the cemetery east of that place and where other members of the family are at rest. Rev. McClusky conducted the services at the grave.
