Juanita Herring Cowden, age 87, formerly of San Diego, CA, died Friday March 15, 2013, at Warm Hearth on the Cove, Blacksburg, VA, where she resided. Born in Huntington, WV, August 9, 1925, she is the daughter of the late George Herring and Pearl Powers Herring. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, CDR Jack Cowden, USN Ret., in 1994, and her sisters Quindora Herring Davis, Beatrice Herring Midkiff, and a brother, Marshall Herring. She attended Marshall University, and was employed as a secretary for 18 years with The Federal Government in Washington, D.C. Surviving is a step-daughter, Diane Underhill of Chesapeake, VA, a step-son, Steven Cowden of Mauldin, SC, a niece Julia Rodgers Koehler now residing in Pulaski, VA, two nephews, James W. Rodgers of Suwannee, GA, Frank Davis of Kansas City, MO, and a great number of great nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held on May 1, 2013, at 2 p.m. at Arlington National Cemetery beside her husband, CDR Jack Cowden, USN Ret.
