My Grandfather was married to Ida Henke on December 5, 1917 in Neshkoro Wisconsin. He had one son, my Dad, Eugene Albert Nickolai, who later married Arlene Schultz and had two children & one daughter Eldora Alice Nickolai, later married Melvin Nero and they had two children.

Grandpa owned Nickolai's Meat Market in Wautoma, Wisconsin which started out being called "City Meat Market" in the early 20's. Sometime during the 1930's he changed the name to "Nickolai's Quality Meats", then in the 1940's to "Nickolai's Meat Market", and that's the way it stayed until the day Grandma sold the business in early 1960 after Grandpa died.

He was always a butcher by trade, starting his career at Reetz's Meat Market in Neshkoro, Wisconsin.

In the '40's he was President of the Wautoma Board of Education. He was an active member of Peace Lutheran Church in Wautoma Wisconsin right up until he passed away.

He had a firm faith in the Lord and in the Doctrine of the Lutheran Church all of his life.

He was very happy when I was born as I was the first male baby to carry on the Nickolai name. My parents have told me he loved me a lot. On the day of my Baptism he found a 4 leaf clover which he gave to my mom. She preserved it and we still have it today.

Grandpa I was told, was born with a bad heart & suffered with that throughout his life. Deer Season in 1959 was very busy that year & grandpa had to work extra hard that year & it overtaxed an already tired heart. He passed way while in the Berlin Memorial Hospital in 1960. My parents were glad that he was around long enough to see me born. Grandpa's parents were William August Nickolai & Hulda Marie Fratzke Nickolai. He died when I wasn't even a year old.

I never had the privilege of knowing my Grandfather & I've always wondered what he was like. But someday I'll get to know, along with other family that have passed through the veil, and that should be a great reunion!
