A sad case of the suicide of a woman occurred at Silver City yesterday afternoon. Mrs. McLain, wife of Daniel McLain, aged abou 35 years, went to a neighbor's house, Mrs. Brainard's, and appearing quite unwell she asked leave of Mrs. Brainard to lie down on her bed a short time, which was granted. In a little while Mrs. McLain asked her for a little laudanum, to put her to sleep, and Mrs. Brainard accordingly brought her a small bottle of laudanum, and also one of paregoric, leaving her to take whichever she wished. Mrs. Brainard then left her and went about her household duties. This happened about two o'clock in the afternoon. Several hours afterward Mrs. Brainard went into the bedchamber to see Mrs. McLain, and found her in the agonies of death! An immediate alarm was given, and on hunting for the laudanum bottle, it was found among the bed clothing, empty, as also was the paregoric bottle, the poor suicide having evidently emptied them of their contents. She had been quite intemperate. (Sacramento Daily Union, 10/11/1869)
