William B. C. Coker was the son of John Coker and Nancy Ballenger of Plains, Sumter County, Georgia

During the Civil War, he enlisted as a Private in the "Sumter Flying Artillery", Company A of the 11th Georgia Artillery Battlion on July 6, 1861 in Americus, Georgia. He was elected 6th Sergeant on November 1, 1861. He transferred to the 63rd Georgia Infantry on October 31, 1862 and later was elected as a Second Lieutenant on December 24, 1862.

It was the custom of the Southern forces during the Civil War to have the men elect their own officers.

After the war he settled in Brunswick, Georgia.
