Private John Melson Coker enlisted on July 6, 1861 in Americus, Georgia in the Confederate Army. He was 22 years old.
He was transferred to Company "A" of the 63rd Georgia Infantry Regiment, CSA on October 31, 1862 and was appointed as a 2nd Sergeant on December 23, 1862. On June 18, 1864 he was wounded in the left thigh by a Minié ball at Kennesaw Mountain, Georgia. He was taken to Hood Hospital at Cuthbert, Georgia and on March 31, 1865 he was furloughed from the hospital.
He died on February 6, 1906 at the age of 68.
