**It should be noted that her name varied from one record to another. "Vitula" was most often used as the first name, but some records have "Sylvia" as the first name and "Vitula" as the middle name. Her Wisconsin birth record says her name is "Vitula Amanda", but no other data has been located that uses that middle name.

Vitula was the fifth of eleven children for Omer Thomas and Amelia Genevieve (Schmanski) Curd.. The family lived at 24 Dove Street in Oshkosh, Wisconsin when she was born, but by 1910 they had moved to 539 Punhoqua Street. By 1916 they had moved again, to 473 Punhoqua Street. At that time, Vitula was working as a domestic.

Vitula married Verne Ferris on August 14, 1917 in Franklin Park, Illinois. They had one child, daughter Geraldine. By 1918 they were living in Everett, Washington and Verne was employed as a switchman for the railroad. They have two different census records for 1920, one in Leyden, Cook County, Illinois. They are living with Vitula's parents In Oshkosh in the second one, dated Jan. 4th. They divorced September 1920 in Winnebago County. (see below newspaper article)

Vitula married Harold Joseph Inks about 1924, probably in Wisconsin. They had one child, daughter Bonnie, who was born in Oshkosh. By 1928 Vitula is found listed in the CA Voter Registration, living at 447 1/2 S. Hartford Avenue, San Antonio, which is in Los Angeles County. She is employed as a clerk. Husband Harold Inks is not listed with her. It is unknown if Harold had died, or if they divorced.

Vitula also gave false information about her age at her first marriage. Vitula married William J. Thurman on April 3, 1935 in Santa Ana, California. They had one child, son Patrick, who was born two years before Vitula and William married.
