Dr. Andrew Irwin Succumbs Monday
Dr. Andrew J. Irwin, prominent Sandersville citizen and member of a famous Georgia family, died Monday afternoon of a heart ailment, following an illness of several weeks.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday afternoon from the Irwin home at 4 o'clock, conducted by Dr. Irwin's pastor, the Rev. E.G. Orahood, pastor of the Christian Church. Interment was in the Old City Cemetery.
Born in Washington County, Dr. Irwin was a son of the late Jared I Irwin and the late Lou Warthen Irwin. He was educated in the Sandersville schools, and was graduated from the State Medical College in Augusta. Following his graduation, he located in Mayfield to practice medicine for several years. Returning to Sandersville, he practiced medicine for several years with the late Dr. S.D. Brantley. His health failed, and he retired from active practice. Later, he began a fire insurance business, which he continued until several months ago. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge.
Dr. Irwin served several terms as postmaster of Sandersville.
Surviving are his wife, the former Miss Anna Stevens, of Mayfield; two daughters, Mrs. C. Findlay Irwin, Sr., and Mrs. W.H. Armstrong, both of Sandersville; one brother, J.T. Irwin of Atlanta; one sister, Mrs. J.S. Wood, Savannah; several grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Active pall bearers were Gordon Garbutt, Sr., E.O. Mize, S.G. Mercer, A.W. Smith, William Donovan and Carleton Lang. the honorary escort was composed of C.D. Shelnutt, W.R. Lang, J.D. Mize, Robert Dudley, Frank Garbutt, Charlie Will Rawlings and Wallace Scarborough. Sandersville Funeral Home was in charge.
