Irv was born on May 15, 1919 to Fred and Anna Nelson Brandemuehl. He was raised on the family farm and 'loaned out' to extended family members during the summers to help with farm chores.

In the 1930 Census Irving Brandemuehl was living at the Albert Sell farm in Morgan, WI, working as a farmer laborer there. Albert Sell's wife was related to Irv.
In the 1940 Census, Irv had moved home to the family farm on Townline Road just north of Gillett. He was 25 years old and living with his mother and father Fred and Anna Brandemuehl. Irving was listed as being single, having completed 8th grade and no longer in school. Also living in the house at the time was his sister Vivian, age 22, who after one year of college was teaching, and two young siblings.

Irv married Emma Runge in the late 1940's and the couple made their home on the family farm in Gillett. Irv farmed the land and kept a small heard of Holsteins, with the help of his wife and children.
