Mrs. Florence Riney, 68, a former sheriff of Daviess County, died at 1 a.m. Thursday [April 13, 1961] in Our Lady of Mercy Hospital, following a lingering illness. She was born in Union County, October 30, 1892, but had lived in Owensboro most of her life. She was a member of St. Stephen's Catholic Cathedral. Surviving are her husband, Carl Riney; 1 daughter, Mrs. O.J. Lee; 3 sons, James T. Thompson, Everett Patrick Thompson, all of Owensboro, Joseph Eugene Thompson, Evansville, IN; 24 grandchildren; 1 stepdaughter, Mrs. Frank B. Harris of Owensboro; 3 stepsons, Guy Riney, Owensboro, William M. Riney, with the US Air Force in Germany, Carl Riney Jr., Louisville; 2 sisters, Miss Mary Rose Shoemaker, St. Louis, MO, Mrs. Marie Rita Windling, Wichita, KS; 5 brothers, Joe Shoemaker, Kent, OH, A.J. Shoemaker, California, Charles Shoemaker, Owensboro, Milton & Hubert Lee Shoemaker, both of Evansville. Funeral service will be conducted at 9 a.m. Saturday in St. Stephen's Catholic Cathedral, the Very Rev. Anthony Higdon, pastor, officiating. Burial in the Catholic Cemetery. The body is at the Haley-McGinnis Funeral Home where prayers will be said at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
