Nellie was born in Midvale, Utah, the fourth child of John Clarence Doty and Mary Louise Jenkins. She married Tempest Robinson on September 18, 1907, and they had two children while living in Utah: Viola and Legrand.

The family moved to Jamestown, Idaho, and three more children were born: Mary Olive, and twins John and William, all of whom died in infancy.

They moved back to Utah for a time, and had two more children, Wilda and R. C., before making a final move to California.
