FAREWELL GEORGE......
In 1993 a letter appeared in the Big Train Operator and Garden Railways Magazine titled
'Clubless in Connecticut'. This person. who lived in Connecticut, was searching for a G-Scale Club to join in the area, but had been unsuccessful in finding one. Around the same time, a gentleman from Monroe, CT, who had been in G-scale since 1987 and apparently unaware of this letter, had come up with the idea of forming a G-Scale Club. Being a member of the LGBMRRC he used the membership list to write letters of introduction to all the members living in Connecticut, inviting them to join his new club, which he named the Connecticut GScalers. His name is George Edgerton. (Read more in next photo.)

George received about a dozen responses from that mailing and a club was formed. There was now a garden railroad club in Connecticut. Since 1993, the Connecticut G-Scalers, under George's guidance, as its President, grew from those early days to an organization with many members from Connecticut and New York. Many of the members of the CGS, including George, had their garden layouts featured in Garden Railways Magazine, LGB Telegram and the Big Train Operator. The group also did an indoor layout at Christmas time, in a major retail store in Hartford, CT, called Winter Wonderland. This layout was a must see for many years.
Sadly, George passed away last March 16, 2005 from cancer. It was a shock to me when I found out, due to the fact that in 2004 George was instrumental in coordinating the many Connecticut layouts that were listed on the garden layout tour at the 2004 Mystic Convention. George was proud of his club and its members. (Read more in next photo.)

As important as the Connecticut G-Scalers were to George. he was most proud of his wife
Elaine and his daughter Elizabeth, who shared his love for trains and his own garden layout. I saw George at many LGBMRRC Conventions and several times at the East Coast Large Scale Train Show. Every time that I saw him, Elizabeth was by his side.
Connecticut, the Big Train Operator Club and the G-Scale Hobby lost a good friend and
supporter. However, with the strong foundation that George created, the Connecticut G-Scalers will continue to flourish. No one will be able to say that they are 'Clubless in Connecticut.'
In closing I wish to quote Elizabeth in an email that she sent me, in preparation for this article. It truly describes her father. She wrote, 'He loved his trains and he loved the hobby, but I think he loved the people of the club and others he met at conventions more.'
George will be missed by all who knew him.
