George John Pohl was born on January 18, 1851, in Clarion Township, Bureau County, Illinois. He was the 3rd of 13 children of Elizabeth née Erbes and Gabriel Pohl. He grew up on his father's farm. On January 5, 1873, he married Katharine Billhorn, with whom he was married 38 years. Their union was blessed with nine children, one of whom, Louis, would die at the tender age of two. They farmed in Clarion Township for twelve years. In 1885, they moved to their own farm, east of Mendota, in La Salle County, which they occupied for twenty-four years. In 1909, they retired to a home in Mendota, where they spent their declining years. About a year prior to his death George began to show symptoms of Bright's disease (kidney problems). He later suffered a bout of grippe (influenza), which furthered weakened him. A week before his death, he slipped into a coma after suffering a stroke and on April 2, 1911, he passed away. Funeral services were held at St. John's Lutheran Church, in Mendota, La Salle County, Illinois, on April 5, 1911, with the Reverend Carl Proehl officiating. Burial was in Restland Cemetery.
