Johann "John" Biehl: 1843 - 1902
John Biehl, originally spelt Bühl, was born in the province of Hesse, Germany in a small village called Horbach on the 20th of November 1843 to his parents, Johann Michael Biehl and Margaretha Schaffrath. He was the first child to be born to them. Two years later, in the summer of 1846 his parents immigrated to America with him. They first made their way to the port city of Bremen, where they secured passage on the sailing ship "Copernicus". They all arrived 8 weeks later in Baltimore, Maryland on the 3rd of October 1846. They continued their journey to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where Michael's brother, Peter Biehl, had settled years previously. Another brother of Michael's, Lorenz Biehl, also immigrated to Philadelphia with his family on April 9, 1852, but settled two years later in Chicago, Illinois.
At around 14 years of age, shortly after his mother, Margaretha, passed away, his father decided to move his young family back to the fatherland and to his home village of Horbach. He renewed his friendship with his younger first cousin, Anna Maria Franz who helped him with his children. In the spring of 1859 they all sailed back to America and settled once again in Philadelphia. Three weeks later on June 30, 1859, his father consummated his marriage vows with his first cousin, Anna Maria at St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church in Philadelphia.
Before the war broke out between the States, Michael Biehl moved his family to the Midwest and to a safer place. They settled in Niles, Michigan, where he owned and operated a tavern. Shortly after the Civil war began, John Biehl at the age of 18, enlisted in the Union Army, on December 6, 1861 and was assigned to Company E, 12th Regiment of the Michigan Infantry. He saw action at Shiloh, Tennessee before being medically discharged on July 22, 1862.
After the war the Michael Biehl family with their eldest son, John, all moved westward and planted their roots in Rock Island, Illinois a little town on the Mississippi river that was busily growing by leaps and bounds. It was hoped that this city would be destined for a great future because of its location and that it would become the gateway to the west.
While living in Rock Island, John Biehl at 25 met his future bride, Etta Robley, a Norwegian immigrant. On the 12th of July 1868 he wed the young 19 year old. They conceived five children together, but raised only four to adulthood.
John's first love was for music, and this was his vocation in life. In Rock Island He taught and played music for many years. He was also the leader of "Biehl's Band". His younger half brother, Anthony Biehl was also very talented as a musician, and formed the "Biehl Family Quartet" which played all over the United States.
John and Etta lived the rest of their lives in Rock Island. From 1885 thru 1888 they lived at 1310 Seventh Avenue according to the local city directories. They enjoyed their family and making music. But at the age of fifty-three, his wife, Etta died and was buried at Chippiannock Cemetery in Rock Island, Illinois. Five months later, he joined his wife in the family plot at Chippiannock.
