May have been a son of Thomas M. (1756-1837) & Mary Edwards Bell (1759-1839).

There are some who claim that this Jacob married Martha "Mary" Hay Taliaferro. This is not possible as Martha Bell, wife of Jacob, is listed in the 1850 census for Graves County, Kentucky (where she also died in that same year). Indeed, in the 1850 census for Page County, "Mary Bell" is listed as residing with husband, Jacob. However, there is a Mary Bell, wife of Jacob, living in Page County, Virginia, in 1850. Furthermore, Jacob, widow of "Mary", is shown as residing in Page County in 1860.

From 1810 - 1830, there is a consistent listing for "Jacob Bell" in census records for Shenandoah County. From 1840 - 1870, Jacob consistently appears in Page County.

1810 - Jacob Bell in New Market, Shenandoah County. 4 persons in household; 2 under age 10 (Catherine Bell & Lavinia Bell).

1820 - Jacob Bell in Luray, Shenandoah County. 10 persons in household; 2 males under age 10 (Grafton B., born 1818, & ___), 1 male 10-15 (___?), 1 male 16-25 (___?), 1 male 26-22 (Jacob Bell, father), 2 females under 10 (Elizabeth), 2 females 10-15 (Catherine and Lavinia), 1 female 26-44.

1830 - Jacob Bell in Western District, Shenandoah County. 8 persons in household; 1 male age 5-9 (Joseph T. Bell), 2 males ages 10-14 (Grafton B. Bell & ____), 1 female ages 10-14 (___?), 1 female age 15-19 (___?), 1 female age 20-29 (Catherine Bell), 1 female age 40-49. *Lavinia is no longer in household, married in 1827; Elizabeth no longer in household, married in 1825).

1840 - Jacob Bell in Page County. 8 persons in household; 2 males ages 15-19 (Joseph T. Bell & ___ ), 1 male age 20-29, 1 male age 50-59, 1 female under 5, 1 female 20-29, 1 female 30-39, 1 female 50-59.

1850 - Jacob Bell in District 49, Page County. Listed as age 64, born in Md. Occupation: painter. Wife, Mary, listed as age 70, born in Md. Daughter Lavinia Garrison (widow?), age 40, Catherine Bell, age 36; Joseph T. Bell, age 25; Jane E. Bell, age 25. (Joseph T. and Jane Clatterbuck Bell were husband and wife, having married in October 1849).

1860 - Jacob Bell in District 49, Page County. Listed as age 73, though incorrectly listed as Virginia as place of birth. Occupation: chairmaker. Daughter "Larima" Garrison, age 52; and daughter Catherine Bell, age 48.

Jacob's death record (8/2/1860) reveals that he was born in Funktown (Funkstown), Maryland; occupation: wheelwright; spouse: Mary M. Informant regarding death was daughter, Catherine. Cause of death: "lingering disease".

There is a good possibility that Mary M. was Jacob's second wife. Some point to a marriage between a Jacob Bell and Mary Smith (1816) in Frederick County, Maryland. Yet, there is also another marriage, in 1807 (22 Sept), between a Jacob Bell and Elizabeth Tinterman, also in Frederick County, Maryland.

*Please note: Jacob Bell is not the father of Reuben Pendleton Bell.
