In 1850, her age in the census suggests she was born in 1821.

In 1860, her age in the census suggests she was born in 1817.

In either case, there is a marriage recorded between a "Elizabeth Bell" and William W. Emerson, in Shenandoah (Page) County, Virginia, on 12/17/1825. As Elizabeth would have been well below marriage age (even for the time), it's likely that she was actually older than shown even in 1860. Elizabeth's father listed as "Jacob", but there is no indication as to who this Jacob Bell might be.

There are some who claim that this Jacob married Martha "Mary" Hay Taliaferro. This is not possible as Martha Bell, wife of another Jacob, is listed in the 1850 census for Graves County, Kentucky (where she also died in that same year). Indeed, in the 1850 census for Page County, "Mary Bell" is listed as residing with husband, Jacob. However, there is a Mary Bell, wife of Jacob, living in Page County, Virginia, in 1850. Furthermore, Jacob, widow of "Mary", is shown as residing in Page County in 1860.

From 1810 - 1830, there is a consistent listing for "Jacob Bell" in census records for Shenandoah County. From 1840 - 1870, Jacob consistently appears in Page County.
